Newport, RI - Day 2

Sunday, March 2nd

Our first full day in Newport....upon awakening, the "feels like" temp was a cool 6 degrees. Coming from 70 degrees (Alabama's first faux Spring), the temperature was pretty brutal. However, we didn't let this stop us.

When began the day with breakfast at Mission. According to the Food Network's "Best Bite in Town", a Taylor Ham and Egg Breakfast Sandwich from Mission is a must eat. We have to agree. While much different than a traditional Southern Style biscuit, this square, crunchy on the outside, fluffy on the inside biscuit was worth getting out in the cold for. Plus, the coffee was delicious. Mission, a burger joint, is only open for breakfast on Sundays so it worked out well with our trip. It is a bit away from Newport's city center, technically in Middletown, so having a car on this trip made this one achievable for us.

The menu is small....just different variations of biscuits, but the biscuits are BIG.....and so good. The coffee, top-notch. Our only complaint is that the biscuits are served in carry-out containers.

Our next stop was The Breakers, the "grandest of Newport's summer cottages" and a symbol of the Guilded Age. Of all the times we've visited Newport, we've never toured The Breakers. Many times we've walked the Cliff Walk and admired The Breakers from the Cliff, so we were excited to work this into our schedule on this trip.

It's a beautiful home...but man, what an excess. Such mixed emotions when taking a tour. No matter what you feel when you tour, it is still a part of Newport's history. Perhaps it was because it was the off-season, but we practically had the home to ourselves. While there were others doing their own tours (self-guided), we were never in the same room with others (other than the great room). In the past, when we've walked by on the Cliff Walk, the lawn was full of people....yet we were the only people on the lawn.....(could have been because of that 6 degree temp, lol)

.

Despite a meeting (remember I am here for a conference) and making time for a work-out in the great gym the hotel offers, we made sure to make time for a walk. Our walk took us to the water and through a quaint neighborhood.

As or 2nd day in Newport comes to an end, I’m reminded of just how much this city has to offer—rich history, stunning coastal views, and endless charm. From exploring grand mansions to wandering the waterfront, every moment has been a perfect mix of discovery and relaxation.

Can’t wait to see what Day 3 brings! Stay tuned for more!
