Oak Mountain State Park

Back in the day, the sign that you would see as you entered into the state of Alabama would read "Alabama the Beautiful". These signs have now been replaced with the motto "Sweet Home Alabama". Despite my tumultuous relationship with Alabama, it is, and will forever be, a very beautiful state.

Alabama really does have it all. From the prettiest beaches in the world, to the foot of the Appalachian mountains, to the thick forest land, to the urban landscape......it really is a pretty state.

Alabama has 21 state parks. Each park is incredibly different. While we haven't been to every state park, we have visited at least more than half.

Oak Mountain State Park is the largest state park in Alabama. It is also about 15 minutes from our home and 1 minute from my place of employment. Despite this, we really don't visit it enough. So far this year we've probably been inside the park about 5 times.

OMSP is a mecca for cyclists (road, bmx and mountain), hikers, and water sports enthusiasts. Plus, there is a golf course, horse stables, a campground, and an archery park (just to name a few amenities). OMSP has 3 lakes so there is also the perfect opportunity to fish if that is your thing.

My most recent visit was for paddle boarding. OMSP has a marina where you can rent kayaks, canoes, peddle boats, and stand-up paddle boards. Because I have my own SUP, I didn't need to visit the marina.....instead, I parked near the lake, inflated my SUP, and was on the water in no time.

Double Oak Lake is probably my favorite of the 3 lakes. In addition to the marina, there is also a beach. So, the area is always bustling with activity. I enjoy seeing everyone having a great time while I am making my way across the water.

My favorite time to be on, in or near Double Oak Lake is during early fall. During this time it still feels great outside but the leaves have started changing. If you catch it just right, you will witness the reflection on the trees on the water....it truly looks magical. I am making a promise to myself now, to take my SUP back to OMSP in October.

Oak Mountain State Park is worth a visit, no matter where your interests may lie. There is absolutely something for everyone!!
