Red Mountain Park

There are not enough words to express how much I love Red Mountain Park. This urban park in Birmingham, Alabama is comprised of about 1,500 acres. As you visit, you will see the remnants of the old mines, formerly owned by US Steel Company. Red Mountain Park opened in 2012 and has over 15 miles of hiking/biking trails, a dog park, and tree houses.

Red Mountain Park is historic. As you wander through the park, you will find signs and markers that inform you of the significance. They also utilize the TravelStorys app which brings the park's history to life.

Because Red Mountain Park is approximately 15 minutes outside of the heart of downtown Birmingham, this park is incredibly convenient. Red Mountain Park is open daily, except for Christmas. Their hours fluctuate, so you need to check their website for hours.

While walking the converted railway beds you will catch a glimpse of old mining structures, downtown Birmingham, occasional wildlife, and beautiful trees. One of our favorite places in the park is the Ebsco overlook and the giant Adirondack chairs.

There is no parking fee or admission fee, although donations are welcomed. Red Mountain Park is a public-private partnership between the Red Mountain Greenway and Recreational Area Commission and the Red Mountain Park Foundation.

Next time you are in Birmingham do yourself a favor and head out to Red Mountain Park. You won't be disappointed.
